Step 06: Installing IIS, SMTP and .NET Framework

With the basic server configuration in place, the next steps involve installation and configuration of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). To lay the foundation for the MOSS installation, in this step we’ll install the IIS (Internet Information Services) SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and Microsoft .NET framework.

  • From the Windows Start Menu, select Start > Control Panel > Add and remove Programs
  • Click on Add/Remove Windows Components:
  • The Windows Components Wizard dialog will display. Make sure to check Application Server and then click the Detail button:
  • Now you should see the Application Server dialog. Check ASP.NET and Internet Information Services (IIS). Then click the Details button:
  • This triggers the Internet Information Services (IIS) dialog box. Check SMTP Service, if your Sharepoint installation will use mail services to communicate with users. Click the OK button to take you to back to the previous dialog window, then click OK again:
  • The installation process will begin, and will take a minute or so to configure the selected services:
  • Once the installation process is done, you will see a confirmation message that the Windows Components Wizard has completed and successfully configured the components selected earlier. Click Finish:
  • Next, download the latest version of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.x and, when ready, launch it to start the installation process.
  • Once launched, select the radio button to indicate acceptance of the license agreement and then click Install:
  • It’ll take a bit to download, but the process is automatic:
  • Once done, you will see the “Setup Complete” screen”. Click Exit to close out the .NET Framework installation process:
