Step 07: Basic Installation and Configuration of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS)
This step will illustrate the installation and configuration Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS), used for The Findability Project. While there is available Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) for use with the earlier Microsoft Windows Server 2003, as well as the free Search Server 2008 Express option, we recommend going for the full-on, licensed MOSS product, which what we will illustrate here.
- Start, of course, by inserting the MOSS 2007 installation disc into your CD/DVD drive. Once the program loads, you’ll see a prompt to enter your license key. Initially, the Continue button is greyed out until the license key is validated; once it is, the Continue button turns active and you can click on it to go to the next screen:

- Accept the licensing terms and then click Continue:

- At this juncture, you have a choice to do a “Basic” or “Advanced” installation. The Basic install creates a stand-alone server with a set of default settings, meaning that you do not have much choice in case you want to change something during the installation process. The Advanced install gives you greater flexibility and more options for configuring a single server or a farm server. In this example, we will choose Advanced; click the Advanced button:

- On the next screen, under the Server Type tab, select Stand-alone – Install all components in a single machine (includes SQL Server 2005 Express Edition), and then click Install Now:

- Now it is time for the Sharepoint configuration tool to go through its paces and install all essential components, including MSSQL Express 2005. This will take a bit of time; it may take a good 10 to 15 minutes, so be patient!. When the screen below appears, be sure the box for “Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard now” is checked, then click Close:

- The system will inform you that some services will be started during configuration process. As illustrated below, click Next Yes and then Yes, when prompted, to follow through…

- … watch the configuration go through its tasks in sequence…

- … until you get the message “Configuration Successful”. Click Finish to close the installation wizard:

With the completion of this step, you have finished the basic MOSS installation and configuration. The next step explains how to tweak the MOSS configuration alternate access mapping, via the newly installed Sharepoint web application site.
